Tommy Rees Joins Falcons as Offensive Coordinator
The Atlanta Falcons have hired Tommy Rees as their new offensive coordinator, reuniting him with head coach Kevin Stefanski. This marks the next step in a growing partnership between the two, who previously worked together with the Cleveland Browns.
A Reunion After Cleveland’s Shakeup
Tommy Rees, who spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, was promoted to offensive coordinator there in 2022. However, after Stefanski’s firing earlier this month, both coaches found themselves looking for new opportunities.
Rees has an extensive coaching background, including stints as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Notre Dame and Alabama before joining the Browns. His recent success in Cleveland made him a prime candidate for the Falcons’ top offensive position.
The Falcons’ New Leadership Structure
Following the firing of former head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot, the Falcons moved quickly to secure Stefanski as their new head coach. Now, Stefanski will work alongside Rees in an attempt to revive the Falcons’ offense.
The Falcons’ 2023 season ended in a tie atop the NFC South with an 8-9 record, showcasing their need for stability—especially at the quarterback position. As Michael Penix Jr. recovers from an ACL injury, and questions about Kirk Cousins’ future linger, finding a reliable signal-caller remains a priority.
Stefanski and Rees: A Strong Coaching Duo
Despite the Browns’ struggles under Stefanski’s leadership, including a disappointing pair of 8-win seasons, the coach won two Coach of the Year awards during his tenure. Now, in Atlanta, both Stefanski and Rees are hoping to turn things around. Together, they bring a wealth of experience to a Falcons team in need of offensive stability.
The pair’s reunion marks the beginning of a promising new chapter for Atlanta, as they work to rebuild the team with fresh leadership and a shared vision for success.
